Oolong tea (also spelled wulong or wu long) is grown mainly in China and Taiwan where this popular beverage is an integral part of the social fabric. Taiwan in particular produces an exceptional level of quality in its tea due to the ideal climate conditions of the mountainous terrain that keeps the tea vines at a perfect cool temperature.

In colour and taste Oolong tea sits between a green and a black tea, but is referred to as a green tea. It is a semi-fermented tea offering some of the flavenoids of green tea and has a warming floral aroma with a slightly bittersweet after-taste. Taiwanese oolongs in particular are noted for their nutty notes and subtle peachiness. Oolong tea does not have the same “grassy’ or vegetable notes of green tea. Tea lovers value the sweetness and complexity of this tea on the palate and treasure the experience of the preparation and serving of oolong tea.

Recent studies have indicated that regular oolong drinking promotes the growth of LDL (bad cholesterol cells) which actually then prevents these LDLs from being able to easily enter the artery walls, therefore reducing the risk of cholesterol build-up and blockage within the body. Oolong teas also have a reputation for assisting in weight-loss.
